Advent Zagreb 2024

For years now, Zagreb has been known for its winter event Advent Zagreb, which, along with rich cultural, entertainment, children's and gastronomic programs, brings a special atmosphere and offers visitors to the city a magical experience that combines imagination and the holiday spirit.

Although at Christmas time the city is bustling with events in the open air, the atmosphere in restaurants is also buzzy, since they are still favourite gathering places for Zagrebians and their guests. Like every year, Delicious Zagreb brings you a list of restaurants you should not miss during this holiday season.

This time, the Delicious Zagreb route through famous Zagreb restaurants starts from the main city square, Ban Jelačić Square, where Johann Franck is located — a famous café, a place for going out and the location of the Croatian tapas restaurant Sol. The rich season of events during Advent at Johann Franck will be marked by a traditional concert celebrating Frank Sinatra's birthday combined with a wine & dine experience on two floors of this spacious restaurant, then a daily gathering for Christmas Eve with the greatest hits of the legendary pop group Novi Fosili and a special selection of tapas, and finally the Black & White NYE Dinner Party - a New Year's cabaret show.

A little further down Gajeva Street, in Cukeraj, every Saturday morning and on Christmas and New Year's Eve you can enjoy live band music with a special offer of sparkling wine and wine.

To the north of the main square, Ficlek restaurant has already started its traditional winter menu of dishes such as sarma with mashed potatoes and sausages with stewed potatoes and sauerkraut; every Christmas Eve they prepare salt cod stew, for restaurant guests, but also for takeaway orders. They will be open until 5:00 PM on Christmas Eve, and reservations for takeaway salt cod stew have already started.

Zagreb also offers a lot for young people. For those who don't like to stick to tradition, Taqueira Cato has prepared holiday combinations of its handmade tacos and signature takeout cocktails, which are available for order, and Koncept Mlinček on the west side of the city is holding its own Advent until 4 January, with various Christmas delicacies, concerts and Christmas movies.

Zagreb's first bistro, Lari i Penati, traditionally holds its own early Christmas Eve celebration, preparing exclusively fish specialties — fritto misto, salt cod stew...

A whole month of salt cod prepared in various ways awaits us at Tač, a favourite place for gourmets. Their winter home-made menu is already in full swing — sausages, black pudding, sauerkraut, turkey with mlinci. You can find their recipe for salt cod stew (link to the recipe); its popularity is best demonstrated by the fact that on Christmas Eve, when salt cod is traditionally eaten in Croatia, more than 300 portions come out of their kitchen just to be delivered to homes all around Zagreb. And it’s impossible to count the number of portions they serve in the restaurant in December… Tač's Christmas Eve lunch is also very popular and it’s hard to find a free place in the restaurant.

Every Sunday during Advent, Tomassino Restaurant is preparing a rich 4-course holiday lunch at a discount price, and the menu changes every week. Guests can choose from a selection of winter dishes and create their own menu.

For those seeking a unique gastronomic experience, Dubravkin put — a Zagreb fine dining restaurant that has been awarded one Michelin star this year — has traditionally prepared a Christmas tasting menu comprising modern versions of dishes such as Olivier salad and pork, salt cod stew, sarma, and Christmas cakes.

Every year, the Zagreb hotel Esplanade Zagreb prepares a rich holiday program, such as aromatic winter cocktails at their Esplanade 1925 Lounge & Cocktail Bar and glamorous New Year's Eve celebrations.

For those looking for a modern ambiance and Asian cuisine, Zagreb hotspot Kiyomi is also preparing a New Year's Eve dinner, and, along with their selection of New Year's Asian dishes, a signature welcome cocktail and champagne at midnight.
